Soccer: Inter bucked for Torino
Leaders open up six- point lead with Catania win
(ANSA) - Rome, January 29 - Serie A leaders Inter Milan were bucked for Sunday's home match against 18th-placed Torino by Wednesday night's 2-0 win at 12th-placed Catania that opened up a six-point gap over second-placed Juventus.

Juve lost 2-1 at 12th-placed Udinese Wednesday but third-placed AC Milan failed to make up much ground, held 1-1 at home by 4th-placed Genoa despite a ripping freekick goal by David Beckham, his second since joining them on loan from the LA Galaxy.

The goal, and Beckham's all-round performance, fueled speculation he might turn the two-month loan into a longer stay.

Milan, who are two points behind Juve, travel to 9th-placed Lazio on Sunday night while Juve host 9th-placed Cagliari the previous night.

Roma, a point behind Genoa after a 2-1 win over Palermo, go to last-placed Reggina while 6th-placed Fiorentina, a 2-1 winner over Napoli, travel to 18th-placed Bologna.

F1: Ferrari boss rules out Rome GP
But one- off event 'possible', Montezemolo says
(ANSA) - Rome, January 28 - Ferrari boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo on Wednesday ruled out a new Grand Prix in Rome.

The Fiat and Ferrari chief, who is also head of the new F1 teams association, said the plan was ''unthinkable''.

However, he said that a special one-off event ''to showcase Rome'' might be open to discussion.

Such an event might take place in the Mussolini-era Roman district of EUR, he said, pointing out that overtaking would be possible there unlike other new street circuits like Valencia and Singapore.

Italy already has two F1 circuits, Monza which is home to the Italian Grand Prix and Imola which hosts the San Marino Gp.

A group of Italian investors and racing enthusiasts was formally set up on Wednesday with a view to bringing F1 to Rome in 2011.

According to the media, the group planned to rival the historic Monaco Grand Prix.

Soccer: Ancelotti hopes Kaka stays
But deal up to player and club, coach says
(ANSA) - Varese, January 16 - AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday he hoped to be Kaka's coach ''for many more years''.

It was up to Milan and Kaka to weigh Man City's reported record-breaking 120 million euro bid, the coach said.

He indicated that he had not been consulted - just as was not when he lost Zinedine Zidane from Juventus to Real Madrid in 2001 for the current world record of 76 million euros.

''This is a matter for the player and the club to decide,'' Andreotti said.

Asked if there was ''a real chance'' of Kaka going, Ancelotti was cagey, saying only that he had ''an idea''. Ancelotti added that while Kaka was ''a fundamental player'' Milan would still be aiming ''at least'' for the Champions League title and a UEFA berth even if the Brazil star goes to Manchester City...>>>

F1: Ferrari drivers all geared up
Ecclestone sees Alonso with the Scuderia 'sooner or later'
(ANSA) - Madonna di Campiglio, January 15 - Ferrari's drivers are all geared up and ready to go with high hopes and clear objectives for the 2009 Formula season.

''I don't have to prove anything to anyone anymore, after last season I feel stronger and more competitive,'' Brazil's Felipe Massa told the press here in this mountain resort on Thursday.

Massa lost the 2008 title to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton by one point in the last race of the season, which he won on his home turf in Brazil.

Turning his attention to Ferrari's car for 2009, Massa said ''for sure it is totally different from the one we used last year. It handles differently and slides more, having less aerodynamic pressure''.

In regard to the new KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) device to exploit energy produced from braking, Massa observed that ''this is something totally new for us but I have to admit that the first tests have gone much better than we had expected''.

Kimi Raikkonen was also on hand for the traditional pre-season press conference and said he was glad to be getting back behind the wheel soon and even happier to be with Ferrari.

''This will probably be the last team I race for. I don't want to go anywhere else because I'm happy where I am,'' said the Finn who won the world championship in 2007, his first year with Ferrari.

While Massa has already tested the new Ferrari F60, giving it its inaugural spin on the track last week, Raikkonen will only get behind the wheel later this month when pre-season tests begin at the Portuguese circuit Portimao. In regard to speculation he will be replaced next year by Renault's two-time Spanish world champion Fernando Alonso, Raikkonen replied: ''I have a contract for this year and next and personally I don't pay much attention to these rumors and I don't feel under any pressure''.

Massa was also quizzed by the press on Alonso and said ''they've been talking about him for the last two years but I don't see him here with us now and that says it all. Rumors are rumors, sometimes they turn out to be true, sometimes they don't''.

''We both have contracts for the next two years, a lot can happen over that time, we'll see,'' he added.

ECCLESTONE SEES ALONSO IN FERRARI 'SOONER OR LATER'.

The possibility of Alonso joining Ferrari is just a matter of time for Bernie Ecclestone, whose Formula One Group controls the commercial side of the motor sport.

Speaking to Italian TV on Thursday, Ecclestone said ''Alonso is right now the best in the world, faster than Lewis, Felipe, Kimi, all of them. Sooner or later he'll end up at Ferrari''. Much will depend, the F1 boss observed, on what Ferrari decides to do with Massa and Raikkonen.

Commenting on Wednesday on the possibility of Alonso joining Ferrari, team principal Stefano Domenicali said ''There's nothing I can add to what has already been said on this. Our drivers have signed contracts, even if (Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di) Montezemolo always says never say never. Fernando is a great driver and we would be very happy to have him with us''.

The 17-race 2009 Formula 1 season opens March 29 with the Australian Grand Prix.

Rugby: Lo Cicero dropped
Veteran prop doesn't make pre- Six Nations camp
(ANSA) - Rome, January 12 - Italy rugby coach Nick Mallet on Monday left veteran prop Andrea Lo Cicero out of his 30-man training camp for the upcoming Six Nations tournament.

Lo Cicero, 32, is the only player to have taken part in all of Italy's campaigns since it was admitted in 2000.

The Sicilian player, who has 78 caps, was upset he had not been informed of his omission.

''After 11 years in the Italy team I would have expected a phone call at least,'' he told ANSA on the phone from Paris where he plays for second-division outfit Racing Metro Paris.

''I find myself out of the squad without an explanation. I'm really upset''.

Asked about the possibility of Mallett having a rethink during the tournament, Lo Cicero replied: ''We'll see if I go if it does happen. I'm not a boy any more and could tell him to buzz off''...>>>
